Finished Final Pieces.

Final Piece Plan

These are very crude drawings of my plans for the final piece. I will be creating 5 shrines - one for each of the forms of escapism. There are several stages to making the shrines.

Stage One:

Paint the five wine crates in white gloss paint. Paint crudely so wood texture shows through.

Stage Two:

'Wallpaper' the inside of each shrine.

Pornography:
with images of pornography cut out from magazines

Literature:
with yellowed pages of an old book

Rock 'n' Roll:
with images of rock and roll icons

LSD:
with psychedelic swirl paintings created using the rotator painter

Alcohol:
Stick miniature bottles of alcohol to the inside of the crate

Stage Three:

cover the outside edge of the shrine with artificial flowers and leaves.

Stage Four:

cut out the image of the saint without projection mounted on foamboard and place it in the shrine.

Shrines in Popular Culture

Here are three shrines to elements of popular culture. The first is to the film 'The Virgin Suicides', the second is to the singer Morrissey and the third is to the bad Hole.

I like the way that these shrines still seem sacred despite the fact that they contain no religious imagery.

Sophia Coppola

Sophia Coppola's film The Vigin Suicides contains both religious and shrine-like imagery. The camera often zooms in on small details which is fascinating and helps to paint a realistic portrait of the sister's lives. I really like the teenage element in the details and this is something I would like to further explore.
